CNA today announced fourth quarter 2019 financial results.

Fintech firms in the UK are more confident than those in any other sector according to our Risk and Confidence research undertaken in May ‘19¹. Their confidence was three percentage points above the general industry average in 2019 and is predicted remain so in 2020, when over 50% of sector leaders expect to be confident in the ability of their business to grow and prosper. In fact, fintech sits a full five percentage points ahead of any other UK sector in terms of business confidence.

Brexit brings some serious challenges for UK life science businesses, most notably in terms of the regulation and funding of clinical trials, adding barriers to investment in the UK and threatening access to the latest medicines. However, the dominance of Britain as a life science destination in Europe means well over a third of sector leaders remain confident in the ability of their business to grow and prosper as they look ahead to 2020.

UK healthcare business leaders are predicting a rise in confidence in their businesses’ ability to thrive and prosper in 2020, with a 10% increase in confidence levels predicted by next spring compared to spring this year. At the same time, 94% believe that the current risk environment is moderate to high but this percentage drops to 80% when looking ahead to next year. Despite healthcare bosses predicting an improvement in the risk environment, these levels of risk concern are some of the highest across all nine sectors we surveyed for our Risk and Confidence report1 this year.

Asian companies expect to see a sharp spike in business confidence as they enter 2020, with 76% of firms expecting to be confident by May 2020 . However, leaders are also bracing for risky times ahead.

Confidence within the UK construction industry is set to bounce in 2020, when 42% of construction business leaders are upbeat about the ability of their business to grow and prosper compared to only 32% in May 2019 . Similarly, construction bosses think the risk environment will improve next year, with 82% believing they will be operating in a medium to high risk environment in 2020, compared to 86% in the spring this year.

Confidence is predicted to remain low among UK-based professional services firms in 2020. Only 34% (just over one third) expect to feel confident in their ability to grow and prosper in 2020, while 80% believe they will be operating in a moderate to high risk environment .

Only 40% of UK technology firms expect to feel confident in their ability to grow and prosper in 2020, while 86% believe they will be operating in a moderate to high risk environment.

Fewer than a third (30%) of UK transport and logistics businesses expect to feel confident in their ability to grow and prosper in 2020, a substantial drop on 2019 confidence levels.

On the surface, confidence levels are creeping up and risk perceptions are on the wane as leaders of UK financial services businesses look ahead to 2020.

Just 30% of British manufacturers surveyed for our Risk and Confidence report are predicting confidence in their ability to grow and prosper in 2020, and 84% believe they will be operating in a moderate to high risk environment next year. These figures reflect the tough trading conditions facing manufacturers created by a drop in output linked to global trade wars and ongoing uncertainty over Brexit.

European business leaders are predicting that the trading environment will worsen by Spring 2020, with 73% of businesses leaders’ predicting that they will be operating in a moderate to high risk environment, compared to just 65% in May 2019¹.

LONDON, 23 November 2015 – CNA Hardy has further expanded its regional presence with the opening of its fifth UK office, in Birmingham. This marks the second UK office opening in 2015 for CNA Hardy. Craig Jones-Newey has been appointed as Regional Manager for Midlands and the South West, based in Birmingham. Reporting to Elliot Miller, Head of UK Regions, Craig will be responsible for the day-to-day operations in Birmingham, as well as developing the CNA Hardy brand and presence across the UK Midlands. Craig joins CNA Hardy from AIG.

LONDON, 18 August 2015 – CNA Hardy has appointed Archie Johnson as Underwriting Manager for Property & Casualty. Reporting to Elliot Miller, Head of UK Regions, Archie will be responsible for building the Scottish and Northern Irish P&C book of business.

LONDON, 22 June 2015 – CNA Hardy has appointed Andy Clements as Distribution Director, Europe. He will report to Elliot Miller, Head of UK Regions and Luc Malâtre, VP Field Operations.

Andy will be responsible for building effective and long lasting strategic relationships with broker partners. Setting and leading a cohesive distribution strategy across CNA Hardy in Europe, to assist in driving profitable growth across all products and industry segments.

LONDON, 25 May 2015 – CNA Hardy has appointed Clive Magnus as Senior Underwriter for Energy, reporting to Carl Day, Head of Energy and Marine. Clive’s appointment follows a string of senior hires in the Energy and Marine team, including Carl Day, Matthew Bond and Miles Osorio.

LONDON, 06 May 2015 – CNA Hardy has appointed Simon Hodgin as Regional Manager of its Manchester office. Reporting to Elliot Miller, VP Head of UK Regions, Simon will be responsible for the day-to-day operations in Manchester, as well as developing the CNA Hardy brand and presence across the North of England. He will also focus on expanding the firm’s distribution network, driving growth across all products and industry segments.
